ดร.ถั่น ทอ คอง เป็นผู้ที่มีส่วนร่วมในการอนุรักษ์หนังสือและการส่งเสริมการอ่านในประเทศพม่ามายาวนานกว่าหนึ่งทศวรรษ ภายหลังจากสำเร็จการศึกษาแพทยศาสตร์จากสถาบันการแพทย์ในเมืองย่างกุ้ง ดร.ถั่นทำงานในวงการแพทย์อยู่หลายปี จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2537 เขาได้ร่วมก่อตั้งศูนย์หนังสือเมียนมาร์ขึ้นเพื่อผลิตและเผยแพร่หนังสือภาษาอังกฤษเกี่ยวกับประเทศพม่า รวมทั้งการอนุรักษ์ตำราพม่าโบราณที่จารึกในใบลานก่อนที่จะองค์ความรู้เหล่านี้จะสูญสลายไป ในปี พ.ศ. 2544 เขาได้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิอนุรักษ์หนังสือพม่าขึ้นเพื่อสานต่อโครงการอนุรักษ์หนังสือที่ริเริ่มขึ้นโดยบิดาของเขา คือ ดร. อู่ ทอ คอง นักวิชาการผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิและอดีตคณบดีของโครงการประกาศนียบัติห้องสมุดพม่า นอกจากนี้ ดร.ถั่น ยังเข้าไปช่วยเหลือในโครงการส่งเสริมการอ่านมากมาย อาทิ เป็นผู้อำนวยการประจำประเทศพม่าของมูลนิธิฟื้นฟูห้องสมุดจากภัยพิบัตินาร์กิส และยังเป็นผู้อำนวยการบริหารมูลนิธิห้องสมุดพม่าอีกด้วย ในระยะกว่าสิบปีที่ผ่านมา ดร.ถั่นได้ศึกษารวบรวมตำราโบราณ งานเขียนสำคัญๆ เกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม โบราณคดีและวรรณคดีภาษาพม่า รวมทั้งของชนชาติต่างๆ อันหลากหลายในประเทศพม่า นำมาพัฒนาในรูปแบบฐานข้อมูลดิจิทัลเพื่อให้ง่ายต่อการค้นคว้าและเข้าถึงยังผู้อ่านในวงกว้าง
 

Dr. Thant Thaw Kaung

Dr. Thant Thaw Kaung has been actively involved in book preservation and reading promotion in Myanmar for more than a decade. After graduating from the Institute of Medicine I, Yangon, Myanmar, Dr. Thant practiced medicine for some years then, in1994, decided to open Myanmar Book Centre to feature English titles as well as to preserve the country’s palm leaf manuscripts. In 2001, he established Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation to carry on the projects designed by his father, U Thaw Kaung, a prestigious scholar and the former Dean of Myanmar's Library Diploma program. Dr. Thant is also director of Nargis Library Recovery Foundation in Myanmar and executive director of Myanmar Library Foundation. Over the last decade, he has undertaken considerable research into preserving ancient manuscripts, articles and works on Myanmar history, culture, archaeology and literature as well as ethnic manuscripts and developing them into digital forms to make them accessible as a searchable database for wider readers. He is invited to TK Conference on Reading 2012 to present the roles of Myanmar libraries in knowledge development and also the interesting activities of Myanmar Book Aid Foundation.
